We write the biographies of people from around the globe, and find that although there are cultural and environmental differences, collecting their stories isn't much different from place to place or person to person. To answer your question about what information is most relevant, and if you should limit the input of the subject, we generally feel that the subject knows what is important, and it will come out if your exercise patience during the listening and questioning process. How much information you should collect is dependent, of course, on how much you intend to share in the book you're writing. We usually leave that up to the subject, but if you are writing the book on your own, then a set of predetermined questions may be helpful in providing consistency though the various stories. I live in rural Peru and would like to put together an anthology of short biographies of the local people. I am in the process of defining my criteria and devising a methodology for the "study" or data compilation process. I am wondering if anyone has some good advice or even templates for recording biographical data in rural-latin american settings (or other settings). I am also wondering if once I have devised my approach if there is anyone who might have the kindness of heart to give me some feedback. And thirdly :-) , I am wondering if anyone has an opinion on whether it is better to go in with the objective of recording whatever the person wants to tell based on say three general questions and then later determine what is most "biography relevant" OR go in with a specific theme or idea and have ten or more questions prepared.
